  • Aleksandr Smirnov wins the 35th national title at the 2022 Estonian Table Tennis Championships

Aleksandr Smirnov wins the 35th national title at the 2022 Estonian Table Tennis Championships

The 84th Estonian Table Tennis Championships in Tallinn brought together all the country’s leading players, who displayed some quality results.

Among the favorites of this tournament, traditionally was one of the most accomplished Estonian players – the 43-year old Vallot Vainula, who prior to this year’s edition, won the gold medals 34 times. At the peak of his career, Vainula played professionally in the Spanish Superdivision, winning the bronze medal in 2009. Before the tournament, he was ranked first in the Estonian ranking.

However, Vainula managed to add two gold medals to his collection in doubles and mixed doubles events. In the singles event, the Estonian veteran reached the semi-finals stage, where he was knocked out by another experienced player – the 37-year old Aleksandr Smirnov (4-3). In the final, Smirnov faced Toomas Libene, who also had a thrilling 7-set victory against the 2021 Estonian singles champion Maksim Vuhka.

While both semi-finals brought a lot of uncertainty and it was had to predict the winner, the final match-up turned out to be pretty much one-sided. The more experienced Smirnov have away only one set to Libene and won 4-1. It was his 35th gold medal at the Estonian Championships, and he is now only two medals away from being the most accomplished Estonian player. The former Soviet and Estonian international Rein Lindmae has 37 titles on his resume, while Vainula has 36. It looks that the next year might be an opportunity for both – Smirnov and Vainula to get past Lindmae.

In the doubles event, Smirnov and Vainula won the final game, overcoming the duo of Stanislav Strogov and Aleksandr Lušin 3-2. In the mixed doubles event, Vainula and Airi Avameri relatively easily cruised to the gold medals, winning the final against Maksim Vuhka and Liidia Andreeva 3-0.

  • Fan Zhendong wins the 15th singles title in his career at the WTT Singapore Smash

Fan Zhendong wins the 15th singles title in his career at the WTT Singapore Smash

WTT Singapore Smash got wide coverage on the social media accounts of World Table Tennis, and deservedly so. This tournament brought some exciting matchups and surprising results.

Some of the underdogs managed to pull out surprising victories over higher-ranked opponents. The 20-year old Japanese talent Yukiya Uda was able to overcome the experienced German legend Timo Boll (World Ranked 9th) in the Round of 32. He eventually reached the semifinals stage, where he lost to the World Ranking leader Fan Zhendong.

One of the favorites of this tournament, the Brazilian star Hugo Calderano (WR 3) was knocked out in the Round of 64 by the Portuguese player Joao Geraldo (WR 62) 3-2. However, the successful run by Geraldo was cut short in the next round against the Swedish international Kristian Karlsson.

Other surprises in the singles event included the loss of Tomokazu Harimoto (WR 4) to the American table tennis star Kanak Jha (WR 30), Benedikt Duda’s (WR 42) win against the vice-champion of the latest WTTC Truls Moregardh (WR 14), and Korea’s Lim Jonghoon’s (WR 59) confident performance against the Chinese star Lin Gaoyuan (WR 8) 3-0.

The battle for the trophy, traditionally, was fought between the two of the best players in the world right now – the current and the former World champions Fan Zhendong and Ma Long. Both of them had some ups and downs on their way to the final. Ma Long had close wins against Wang Chuqin and Lin Yun-Ju, while Fan Zhendong had a tough time against the Korean An Jaehyun in the Round of 16.

The final itself was everything the fans in Singapore could have asked for. A seven-set thriller with several lead changes. At some points of the game, it seemed like Fan Zhendong can take this one smoothly, while Ma Long later showed his ability and mental resilience to make a comeback. Still, the final word was said by Fan Zhendong, who won the decisive set 11-7 and earned his 15th singles title in his career. Earlier, he also got some extra joy after winning the doubles event together with Wang Chuqin. They won the final against the Japanese duo Yukiya Uda and Shunsuke Togami 3-1.

The German duo Benedikt Duda and Dang Qiu also enjoyed a successful run, winning the bronze medals in the doubles event. They showed some solid resistance against the eventual champions in the semifinals.

Fan Zhendong once again proved that he is deservedly considered the best player in the world right now, but he displayed plenty of respect to his Chinese teammate: “I hope that the audience enjoyed this game and Ma Long also deserves the applause for his performance. Every time I play against him, it becomes a learning experience for me. Today’s match was very challenging for me, and there were moments when I fell behind. I am very happy to win this title in Singapore”.

  • Chinese stars and young talents dominate the WTT Contender Muscat

Chinese stars and young talents dominate the WTT Contender Muscat

The Chinese national team once again displayed its quality and depth in the WTT Contender that was held in Oman’s capital Muscat.

While many international stars did not take part in this tournament, China national team brought a solid set of players, led by Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan, and Wang Chuqin. Chinese also brought some of their brightest talents to give them a chance to earn some extra points in the World Rankings.

Among the players who reached the quarterfinals in the singles event, six of them were Chinese players, and only Nigerian star Quadri Aruna and Swedish international Jon Persson managed to reach this stage.

The singles event was once again a success for the 25-year old Liang Jingkun, who comfortably cruised towards the title up until the semifinals stage, where he faced the young Chinese talent, Xiang Peng. It took seven sets to find out the winner. Xiang Peng had a 3-2 lead, and he was ahead in the sixth set as well. However, Liang Jingkun managed to pull out this set, and the advantage was on his side in the decider.

The 19-year old talent impressed on his way to the semifinals, winning the experienced Chuang Chih-Yuan and his Chinese teammate Wang Chuqin, who is currently ranked 13th in the World Ranking. However, this was not the first successful run for Xiang Peng. Back in 2019, he won the Canada Open.

The final match-up between Liang Jingkun and Lin Gaoyuan turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Lin Gaoyuan took the first set, but then he was crushed by his teammate in the next four. 4-1, and Liang Jingkun added another WTT tournament title to his resume after winning two tournaments in Slovenia in 2021.

The doubles event was less successful for Liang Jingkun. Together with Wang Chuqin, they faced a 2-3 loss in the quarterfinals against the eventual winners – Xiang Peng and Lin Shidong. In the final, the young Chinese players confidently overcame the Taiwanese duo Peng Wang-Wei and Chuang Chih-Yuan 3-0. It was the first doubles title on the professional circuit for both Chinese players. It is also worth mentioning the success of the young Romanian players – Darius Movileanu and Eduard Ionescu. They reached the semifinals stage and won the bronze medals in the doubles event.

  • Darko Jorgic enjoys the glory in Montreux, winning his first Europe Top 16 title

Darko Jorgic enjoys the glory in Montreux, winning his first Europe Top 16 title

The Swiss city Montreux welcomed the best European players, who fought for the title of the continent’s best player. This edition of Europe Top 16 featured almost all the highest-ranked European players. The main exceptions were the experienced German player Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Sweden’s Mattias Falck, and the English table tennis star Liam Pitchford.

The new leader of the Slovenian table tennis Darko Jorgic enjoyed a great time in Switzerland, winning the Europe Top 16 title in a very dramatic fashion. His path to the final was not that complex, since he got comfortable wins against Jonathan Groth (4-0), Daniel Habesohn (4-2), and the German Patrick Franziska (4-1). In the final, he had to face the rising Swedish star Truls Moregardh.

The biggest challenge for Moregardh on his way to the final was his compatriot Kristian Karlsson in the 1/4 finals. Moregardh had the lead for most of the game, but Karlsson managed to make a comeback every time up until the seventh set. Eventually, the youngest of two Swedes took the win, winning the decider 11-8.

The final match-up turned out to be very intense, emotional, and dramatic. For both players, it was a chance to win their first title in this tournament. Jorgic was the finalist in 2020, but he lost to the German legend Timo Boll back then. This time, the Slovenian had to make a comeback, since Moregardh had a comfortable 3-1 lead at one point. Still, the comeback was a hard-fought, and Jorgic won the decisive two sets 12-10.

After reaching the final of this tournament, both – Jorgic and Moregardh reached their career highs in the World Ranking, being placed 12th and 14th in the March rankings.

  • Shunsuke Togami takes the title of 2022 All Japan Championships

Shunsuke Togami takes the title of 2022 All Japan Championships

2022 All Japan Table Tennis Championships in Tokyo brought plenty of surprising results, including the disappointing performance by Tomokazu Harimoto in the singles event.

Harimoto, who is currently ranked number four in the World, won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event and the silver medal in the doubles event. However, his performance in the singles event was rather disappointing, since he lost 2-4 to Maharu Yoshimura in the 6th round of this tournament. The 28-year old Yoshimura is currently ranked 89th in the World Ranking. Harimoto has still to find his luck in the local arena to once again enjoy success in the singles event as he did back in 2018.

While Harimoto had his struggles getting into the semi-finals and securing himself at least a bronze medal, it was a successful run for the eventual champion Shunsuke Togami, as well as for Kenta Matsuidaira, Koki Niwa, and Maharu Yoshimura.

In the semi-finals, Togami faced Niwa and gave him no chance, winning 4-0 and securing his place in the final. The other semi-final that was played between Matsuidaira and Yoshimura was one to enjoy for the fans. It took seven sets to find out the second finalist. Matsudaira started the game well, winning the first two sets, but Yoshimura pulled out the next two. Then both won a set each, and everything went into the decisive seventh set. There Matsudaira took an early lead and held it up until the final point, winning the decider 11-3. He reached the final for the first time since 2009.

The final did not come out as a one-sided spectacle, but Togami still played more aggressively, especially, on the serve receive. Up until the fifth set, the game looked even, but then Togami stepped up his game and did everything right to win the game 4-2. It was his first All Japan Championships final appearance, and it turned out brilliantly. Togami also won the gold medal in the doubles event together with Yukiya Uda.

After the final match, Togami expressed his great desire and motivation to earn his place in the Japan squad when there will come time for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. If Togami adds to this local success solid results on the professional circuit, he might achieve his goal.

  • Wang Chuqin takes the WTT Macao title in a seven-set showdown

Wang Chuqin takes the WTT Macao title in a seven-set showdown

The WTT Macao brought together all the leading Chinese table tennis players and showed some surprising results during the tournament.

This tournament had $800 000 distributed in the prize money and featured 14 Chinese players and one player from Hong Kong and Macao. Local player Cheong Chi Cheng was quickly knocked out of the tournament by the current World champion Fan Zhendong. Hong Kong’s Lam Siu Hang got one set from Lin Gaoyuan but eventually lost 1-3 in the Round of 16.

The next round brought some surprises and upsets. The 21-year old Xu Yingbin displayed a truly great performance and knocked out Fan Zhendong 3-1. To a lesser extent, but still a surprise – was the loss of Ma Long to the talented Wang Chuqin 1-3. The 3-time World champion in singles looked strong in the first round against Liang Jingkun, but could not cope with his younger China teammate.

The semi-finals were less exciting in terms of surprising results since Xu Yingbin was quickly beaten by Lin Gaoyuan in just four sets, and the experienced Xu Xin was knocked out by Wang Chuqin 4-1.

Fortunately, the final was a more exciting spectacle for the fans in Macao. Lin Gaoyuan and Wang Chuqin both had some great winning rallies, and there was no clear favorite heading into the final. Both players displayed a great will to win the trophy, and the winner had to be decided in the 7th set.

The final set turned out to be nerve-wracking for both players and it was intense till the last point. Eventually, Wang Chuqin managed to win the seventh set 11-9 and take the WTT Macao trophy alongside $75 000 check. Overall, this tournament did not disappoint, and the great number of Chinese players guaranteed the fans quality table tennis.

  • Simon Gauzy takes the 2021 French National Table Tennis title

Simon Gauzy takes the 2021 French National Table Tennis title

The 91st edition of the French Table Tennis championships brought a lot of joy for many players, like the talented Frenchman Felix Lebrun, who won his first national championships medal – bronze in the mixed doubles event. However, it also did not feature some of the leading players, who would be contenders for the gold medals, such as the experienced Emmanuel Lebesson and Alexandre Cassin.

Since there was no Lebesson, the path to the gold medal in the singles event was a relatively easy task for Simon Gauzy, who is currently ranked 18th in the World Rankings. He never lost more than two sets in a match, overcoming the 26-year old Mehdi Bouloussa in the 1/8 finals 4-2. In the next round, he easily got past the Stephane Ouaiche 4-1 and in the semi-finals stage, his opponent was the rising star, the oldest from Lebrun brothers – Alexis Lebrun.

The talented Lebrun secured himself a bronze medal by winning the Alexandre Robinot (4-2) in the 1/8 finals and Enzo Angles (4-0) in the 1/4 final match. Despite having some chances to take more out of the game against Gauzy, the young Frenchman struggled to cope with a more experienced opponent and lost 2-4. In the 4th set, Lebrun had a 10-4 lead, but he could keep up his lead, and Gauzy won this set 12-10, sending a strong message about his intentions to win it all.

Gauzy’s opponent in the final was the 24-year old Romain Ruiz, who had some truly tough games on his path to the final. In 1/8 finals, Ruiz had a seven-set battle against Antoine Hachard. In the next round, Bastian Rembert also put up a fight, but Ruiz managed to pull out a 4-2 win that secured his place in the 1/2 finals against the experienced 37-year old Damien Provost. French veteran knocked out Can Akkuzu and Leo De Nordost on the way to the 1/2 finals. However, he proved to be a comfortable opponent for Ruiz who got a 4-0 win and booked himself a place in the final.

The final was not really a one to remember in terms of result. Ruiz took one set and won some spectacular points, but Gauzy looked confident and had control over the game. The levels of these players are different, and Gauzy proved his status of favorite, winning his third French National Championships singles title, repeating the success he had the last year in Arnas.

In other events, it is worth mentioning the success of Alexis Lebrun and Esteban Dorr. They won the doubles event, overcoming the higher-ranked Alexandre Robinot and Bastien Rembert in the final match.

  • 40-year old legend Timo Boll takes his 8th European singles gold! The review of 2020 European Table Tennis Championships

40-year old legend Timo Boll takes his 8th European singles gold! The review of 2020 European Table Tennis Championships

The group stage always brings some unexpected results and this year’s tournament was no exception. Sure, world ranking position is not always an objective measure of a player’s current state but in most cases, it gives some clarity who can be considered a favorite. And there were few ones that definitely did not expect to end some of their games with a loss.

The experienced 30-year old Finnish champion Benedek Olah (World Ranked 85) faced the 32-year old Ukrainian Viktor Yefimov (WR 373). Ukrainian managed to take the first two sets but Olah was keen to make a comeback. He did it to an extent. The winner had to be decided in the fifth set and it turned out to be a close one. However, Yefimov did his job and secured a 3-2 win.

3-2 was the end result in some of the others group stage games. What a debut it was for the 15-year old Polish sensation Milosz Redzimski (was not even world ranked), who earned a win against the German Bundesliga hardened Greek Ioannis Sgouropoulos (WR 147), winning the fifth set 11-5. The 21-year old Slovakian player Jakub Zelinka (WR 643) is also worth mentioning with his win over the experienced Ukrainian Yevhen Pryschepa (WR 111) It was also a memorable run for the Moldavian talent Vladislav Ursu (WR 531), who got a win against the Belgium’s Florent Lambiet (WR 104). This win helped him to advance to the knockout round and after winning the Frenchman Can Akkuzu, Ursu advanced to the 1/16 final where his journey ended with a 1-4 loss to Patrick Franziska.

There was also a surprising result in the qualification stage of the doubles event. The 43-year old Estonian player Vallot Vainula (WR 647) and 33-year old Latvian Artūrs Reinholds (WR 926) got an unexpected 3-1 win over the experienced defenders Panagiotis Gionis and Wang Yang. Both of them are TOP 50 players in the world.

In the knockout stage, there were some exciting stories. The main was the surprising win of the young Russian duo Lev Katsman & Maksim Grebnev in the doubles events. On the way to the final, Russians overcame the Swedish pairing of Mattias Falck & Kristian Karlsson in a hard-fought five set game. In the 1/4 finals, they got past Dang Qiu & Benedikt Duda (3-1) and in semi-finals, Russians outplayed the another surprising medal winners of this tournament – the Hungarians Adam Szudi & Nandor Ecseki 3-2. The final challenge was to beat the international pairing of the Polish player Jakub Dyjas, who had his second European finals appearance and the Belgian Cedric Nuytinck, who won his first European Championships medal in Warsaw. In a 4-set showdown, Katsman and Grebnev got a 3-1 win, and could let their emotions go! These two definitely have a great future ahead of them.

In the mixed doubles event, the Germans had their final word. Dang Qiu and Nina Mittelham got a solid 3-0 win in the finals against the Slovak pair of experienced Lubomir Pistej and Barbaba Balazova. The experienced French players Simon Gauzy and Emmanuel Lebesson added bronze medals to their collection in this event.

The knockout stage of the singles events brought some slightly surprising results, like the win of Hunor Szocs over the experienced Austrian Daniel Habesohn 4-2 or the 4-0 win of Lubomir Jančarik over Simon Gauzy. However, the finalists – experienced Germans Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov were surely expected faces to be seen in the gold medal meeting. Boll’s road to the finals was relatively smooth, expect the 1/8 finals match up against his compatriot Benedikt Duda. This turned out to be an intense seven set match. Eventually experience took it over and Boll advanced to the next round, where he got a solid 4-1 win over his Borussia teammate Anton Källberg. In the semi-final, German legend overcame the Swedish hope Mattias Falck 4-2.

Ovtcharov’s journey to the final was a bit tougher. Especially the 1/4 final game against Lubomir Jančarik. The Czech did not had any luck in the first three sets and Ovtcharov had a solid 3-0 lead. However, Jančarik managed to slowly turn the course of the game. He recovered one set after another and soon the result was 3-3. The final set was full of nerves and emotions! Ovtcharov eventually managed to keep himself calm and get this important win on his way to the final. 4-3! Definitely, this was one of the most exciting games of this tournament.

The final was a meeting of two highest quality players with great experience and mutual knowledge. Both represent Germany and have gone through many battles together. Still, the experience of Timo Boll turned out to be more valuable. 40-year old German legend got a 4-1 win and this secured his 8th singles title in his long journey the European Championships. Boll won his first European medal back in 2000! What a career it has been for Timo, he has won a total of 20 gold medals in the European Championships in singles, doubles & team events. Legendary!

Infographic: The highest ranked players & favorites of European Table Tennis Championships

This tournament will bring together all the best names of the European table tennis. If we look on the 10 highest-ranked European players below, there is a mix of experience and ambitious young players, like the 22-year old Slovenian Darko Jorgič. He may be the less experienced on this list but he already has tasted the joy of winning a medal in this tournament. The only player, who is yet to win a medal at European Championships is the 27-year old Englishman Liam Pitchford. Who knows, maybe this year he can achieve the heights John Hilton once did?

Outside this list, you also cannot forget about the Swedish duo of Anton Källberg and Kristian Karlsson, who both just recently won the German Bundesliga title. Källberg has been on fire this season, losing just two games in the Bundesliga. Considering the fact that he had a great performance in the final, Swede might be in his top form for the ETTC. Karlsson also has been solid in the Bundesliga and he might bring some upsets as well.

You also cannot forget about the most experienced warriors – the 40-year old German legend Timo Boll and 45-year old Belarussian legend Vladimir Samsonov, who made his debut at the European Championships back in 1994, winning the bronze medal. Many of the participants were not yet born back then. This might be one of the last major tournaments for Samsonov so he will be highly motivated to finish his career on a high note.

  • Borussia Düsseldorf ends the season in a style, winning title number 31

Borussia Düsseldorf ends the season in a style, winning title number 31

Swedish player Anton Källberg has a great progress this season, turning himself into the leader of Borussia Düsseldorf, and Timo Boll wins the 11th title in his long & successful career! What a season it has been for Borussia! Despite the COVID-19 and truly tough time for everyone, German Bundesliga proved to be an exciting spectacle to enjoy throughout the whole season.

Final match up between Borussia and 1. FC Saarbrücken TT did not disappoint. Although, there was a sense that this might be a more joyful day for the Düsseldorf side. The main reason for that – the rise of Anton Källberg. He truly stepped up this season, winning the lion share of Borussia’s games. 25 wins out of 27 games in the regular season, and two out of two wins after the semi-finals stage against ASV Grünwettersbach.

However, first game of the final showed that Saarbrücken is not going to be an easy side to beat. 22-year old Slovenian Darko Jorgic got a 3-2 win in a tough five set showdown against the Swede Kristian Karlsson. A good signs were on display in the next match up, when Patrick Franziska won the first set against Borussia’s leader Anton Källberg, who managed to turn the things around quickly and eventually get a 3-1 win. His success was followed by the German legend Timo Boll, who got a 3-1 win against Saarbrücken’s Shang Kun, coming closer to his 11th Bundesliga title.

Decisive moment was in the hands of Anton Källberg. He coped with the pressure well and his 3-1 win over Darko Jorgic gave a start to celebrations. With this success, Borussia completed its triple of this season. Previously, club from Düsseldorf won the Champions League and German Cup. The MVP of the season is clearly Anton Källberg – was truly consistent during the regular season and kept his mark high in the play-off stage, winning all four games. It would be hard to ask more from him. Near perfect season for the 23-year old Swede.

2020/21 season might be over, but it once again adds some questions for the upcoming season. Borussia Düsseldorf regained their crown, but it is clear that other clubs will do their best to steal the crown from the most successful table tennis club in the German table tennis history. Can they succeed? We will find that out next year!
