Swedish player Anton Källberg has a great progress this season, turning himself into the leader of Borussia Düsseldorf, and Timo Boll wins the 11th title in his long & successful career! What a season it has been for Borussia! Despite the COVID-19 and truly tough time for everyone, German Bundesliga proved to be an exciting spectacle to enjoy throughout the whole season.
Final match up between Borussia and 1. FC Saarbrücken TT did not disappoint. Although, there was a sense that this might be a more joyful day for the Düsseldorf side. The main reason for that – the rise of Anton Källberg. He truly stepped up this season, winning the lion share of Borussia’s games. 25 wins out of 27 games in the regular season, and two out of two wins after the semi-finals stage against ASV Grünwettersbach.
However, first game of the final showed that Saarbrücken is not going to be an easy side to beat. 22-year old Slovenian Darko Jorgic got a 3-2 win in a tough five set showdown against the Swede Kristian Karlsson. A good signs were on display in the next match up, when Patrick Franziska won the first set against Borussia’s leader Anton Källberg, who managed to turn the things around quickly and eventually get a 3-1 win. His success was followed by the German legend Timo Boll, who got a 3-1 win against Saarbrücken’s Shang Kun, coming closer to his 11th Bundesliga title.
Decisive moment was in the hands of Anton Källberg. He coped with the pressure well and his 3-1 win over Darko Jorgic gave a start to celebrations. With this success, Borussia completed its triple of this season. Previously, club from Düsseldorf won the Champions League and German Cup. The MVP of the season is clearly Anton Källberg – was truly consistent during the regular season and kept his mark high in the play-off stage, winning all four games. It would be hard to ask more from him. Near perfect season for the 23-year old Swede.
2020/21 season might be over, but it once again adds some questions for the upcoming season. Borussia Düsseldorf regained their crown, but it is clear that other clubs will do their best to steal the crown from the most successful table tennis club in the German table tennis history. Can they succeed? We will find that out next year!
