Dragutin Šurbek was born 8 August, 1946 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now Croatia). He was one of the leading players of his generation, also known for his great longevity. He won his last European Championships medal at the age of 40 and six years later, Šurbek represented Croatia at the 1992 Olympics being 46 years old.
Šurbek won two World Championships titles in doubles event and was a 5-time European champion – 3 times in doubles, once in singles and team events. He was also a winner of two editions of Europe Top 16 tournament. On the professional tour circuit, Šurbek won 11 titles in singles and 19 titles in doubles event. On the club level, he won the ETTU Cup 3 times and Champions League twice.
